Everything We Know About Re:Zero Season 3

It's been a long time coming, but what do we know about the third season of beloved isekai anime Re:Zero?

Season 3 kicks off one year after the previous season, with Subaru dedicating himself to training thanks to a “secret training facility” courtesy of Roswall L. Mathers. He’s grown in physical strength over the year, becoming more athletic and tougher all for Emilia’s sake so that she can win the royal selection. Subaru’s training gets interrupted by a surprise visitor and Emilia’s summons back to the mansion, so he and Beatrice quickly make their way back.

At the mansion, Subaru and Beatrice are greeted by the lilac-haired Joshua Juukulius, the younger brother to — and rabid fanboy of — Julius Juukulius, as well as a member of the Anastasia Camp. Joshua comes with a proposition too appealing for Emilia to ignore: if she goes to the water-bound Watergate City of Priestella and accept Anastisia’s invitation to an exclusive party, then Anastasia will inform Emilia about a magic crystal that could serve as a catalyst for recalling Puck. Too tempting to disregard, Subaru, Emilia, Beatrice, Otto and Garfiel set off to investigate, though not before Subaru stops by the bedside of the unconscious, yet still wildly popular fan-favorite, Rem.

With the Royal Selection still underway, Otto takes the opportunity to apprise Emilia — and the audience — about the state of the Royal Selection, especially as a year has passed since the conclusion of the previous season. At first, Duchess Crusch Kursten and Lady Anastasia Hoshin were seen as the favorites, yet with the loss of her memories, Crusch’s fallen slightly in favor, allowing Emilia, Priscilla and Felt to gain some traction. In Emilia’s case, her exploits in defeating the White Whale and a Sin Archbishop have endeared her more to the public. For Priscilla, her inheriting her late husband’s land, collecting of influential people, and regaling the public with her charms earned her the title of “Sun Princess” and has helped her make massive leaps in popularity.

Regarding Felt, she rallied the undesirables and the rough people of society to her cause, instigating a potent movement thanks to her flexible and welcoming ideology. But Anastasia Hoshin hasn’t been sitting idle. Backed by the merchants of the Hoshin Company, Anastasia is able to use their wealth to their advantage, opting for a “wealth is a weapon” mentality to further Anastasia along. And as Otto nervously points out to Emilia, becoming indebted to a camp so firmly entrenched in commerce might be a poor play. Still, with the dangling promise of restoring Puck on the line, Emilia and her group press onward.

How Re:Zero Became One of Anime's Most Effective Horror Series

Re: Zero is known for its status as best-of-the-best among isekai, but its underrated horror elements are also some of the best in all of anime.

As the group arrives, they learn a little more about the oddly-designed Priestella. Originally built as a trap more than 400 years ago, the city was constructed around canals, making the infrastructure confusing and labyrinthine — yet perhaps more concerning than the potentially disorienting road-and-canal-ways is the fact that no one remembers what the trap was meant to ensnare. Still, the Venetian-like city sports a bustling, thriving community, thanks in large part to its close proximity to Kararagi, a country with an aesthetic very similar to Japan’s. As the group arrive at the meeting place with Anastasia, Subaru is thrilled to see that it resembles a Japanese Inn, complete with futons on the floor, yukata and okonomiyaki (though they call it daisukiyaki in Karagari).

Before Anastasia can reveal her reasons for the meeting, she sends the group off once more, this time to meet the Songstress Maniac, the man who possesses the crystal they’re searching for — and a man fiercely infatuated with the traveling bard, Liliana. Subaru and Beatrice split from the party after the water-dragon boat gives Subaru a bout of seasickness, which allows him to meet the infamous bard herself. And while her songs' lyrics prove to be unorthodox, she offers to facilitate a meeting with the Songstress Maniac after learning who Subaru is. Unfortunately, the meeting doesn’t end well, and Emilia doesn’t nab the magic crystal she needs, but she’s determined to try again later.

Crunchyroll's Re:Zero Season 3 Premiere Leaks Online Amid One of the Worst Weeks for Anime Streamers

Re:ZeroSeason 3's premiere leaks online, with its anime streamer Crunchyroll joining Netflix in a terrible week due to a growing leaking problem.

Crusch and Felt arrive for this royal meeting, with Crusch being promised a discussion with Anastasia about the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony. The revelation rankles Subaru, but he and Crusch find ground on a common enemy, with the pair both claiming to be the first to find their targets. Yet before Anastasia can explain her reasons for summoning everyone together, she encourages the gathered camps to enjoy the amenities of the Inn. During the downtown, Subaru urges Wilhelm to connect with his grandson, Reinhard, and Garf ventures off on his own, only to find a woman eerily similar to his mother.

Yet the playful mood and easy-going atmosphere gets shattered when the drunk Vice Captain of the Royal Guard Heinkel arrives, revealing himself to be Wilhem’s son and Reinhard’s father. The animosity grows thick as the good-for-nothing Heinkel sinks barbs into his family members, ripping apart what little bonding they managed to achieve while taunting Reinhard with the fact that he won’t let him inherit the Astrea estate. Just when tensions start to boil over, Priscilla saunters in, crashing the meeting, obviously salty at being denied her invitation and looking to extract some cruel entertainment from the others.

As Emilia, Beatrice and Subaru explore Priestella, they encounter Priscilla dancing along to Liliana’s singing. The Royal Candidate attempts to bring the young bard over to her camp, but Liliana refuses to be tied down to anyone or anything, instead leaving only her song behind. Impressed by her earnestness, Priscialla agrees to Liliana’s way of thinking and drops the subject, with Liliana wanting to perform some more but first needing snacks to do so.

As Subaru heads back from his snack run, he joins a crowd of onlookers who’ve stopped to listen to the woman yelling from the top of the bell tower, begging for their attention. From her perch on top of the tower, she introduces herself as the Sin Archbishop representing Wrath, Sirius Romanée-Conti — with her name eerily similar to Petelgeuse’s, one of isekai’s best villains — and requests the gathered group’s help with a small question on the matter of love. As the crowd falls under her spell, their emotions begin to become one, and laughing at the spectacle, no one appears bothered when Sirius drags out a chained boy. After regaling the people with the boy’s heroic sacrifice to spare his friend, Sirius throws the child over the tower. And his fate becomes that of all who bear witness, still trapped in their laughter, unable to feel anything except that collective emotion. Gasping and panicked, Subaru rewinds back to before he left Emilia and Beatrice and bends over, feeling sick to his stomach.
